Jet Engine Costs

I read of engines being damaged by bird strikes, FOD damage, surge damage,

etc, etc. With engines costing from 4mil upwards do airlines / can airlines insure

against this cost or do they pay by the hour, or do they stand the costs

themselves.

I am a retired engineer but my background is G. A.

Larger airlines probably self-insure for component damage, and ramp debris/FOD might be recoverable from the airport operator if negligence can be shown.

But smaller airlines may not be able to risk this, and carry commercial insurance.

Depends. Owned or leased engines. Insurance or not. In house maintainance or offsite vs OEM flying in for the fix, who's watching over this stuff, who's trying to screw who, negotiating skills, etc.

"It depends" and "insured or not" sounds rather like "I don't really know the answer, but I'll give you one anyway!

In corporate FOD and bird strike are covered under you hull risk policy. If its not you are using the wrong broker. I cannot speak for airlines.

My experience is all of the above + add in a max level of self insured and after that the insurrer pays.

I've had some pressure put on me to assess at a level that favours one party

Right, and it's my job to keep that guy from turning a nick on a blade into an early hot section and a disc replacement.
