Question Effective Range of an ELT?

Was asked by ATC last night to listen for an ELT on 121.5. We could hear it and it was quite weak and then it increased in signal strength and drifted back down into the noise.

What's the effectice range of an ELT?

Like any vhf transmission:
1,2 times the square root of the flightaltitude in feet.

What you get is the range in NM.

That would give you 120 NM at 10000ft

This is the theoretical range, in practise it will probably be less.

(80NM )
