NAT Transition Areas

Could someone please explain the signnificance of the Shannon and Northern Oceanic Transition Areas. What are they used for? and is there any reason why they are called Transition Areas. There is nothing similar for Gander and New York Oceanic.

Thanks M.865

Just radar control areas designed to better handle the transition from domestic to oceanic control. These two links may be informative.
