Screen Height

Hi,

Ive read a reasonable amount on screen height and understand that it is an imaginary platform that is flown through on take off. With that in mind I have the following questions regarding it..

a) Why is the actual height different for piston and jet aircraft?
b) Why does the height change when the runway is wet?
c) Is screen height a way to mark the end of the take off phase and therefore define that an aircraft must (or will) achieve that height in x meters?
d) For jet aircraft are we always talking about achieving the screen height "when an engine has failed."

I am trying to conceptually understand the purpose of defining a screen height.

Many thanks.
