Flap 2 ?

Today my friend asked one question about the flap setting on the B737-NG.
" Why there is a Flap 2 setting ? we don`t use it quite often. We use flap 1 and 5 for takeoff, 30 or 40 for app, 15 or 1 for missed app."
The thoughts came through my brain were :
a/ Boeing has the flap 2 takeoff performance, just my company doesn`t use that.
b/ it can reduce the app speed by 10kts compare to flap 1.
And I think it must has somehting to do with the abnormal situation, but I don`t konw it.
Can someone shed some light on me?
Thanks!!

Common hangover from the 727 I believe that found it's way into the 737-100. And it worked there so why change it on the NG? That'd just require more time and effort than it's worth.

The 727 doesn't have a flap 1 position though.

We use it very often on the B737-200 based on the airport analysis charts for some runways. To give you a better picture +/- 300 MSL apt elev. around 6000' long rwy.

I guess on the NG it has lost all its value, on anything longer than the 700 I recon it would contribute to a lot of tail strikes if one were to use it for takeoff - there arent that many airfields where flaps 2 might be convenient - long runway but extreme initial climb? Hmm...

Flaps 1 is used regularly for take off on 800s, flaps 2 though is not an approved take off flaps setting. In fact the range of flap settings for take off is quite broad with positions 1, 5, 10, 15, 25 available.
