B717 smoke on ground

Was in queue behind a B717 with smoke coming from rear left side. A/c ahead reported it to Ground atc who passed it on B717, who reported it as "normal". Was definitely not brakes, and more than an APU shutdown or an oil-breather bypass (a la BAe146).
Anyone know the reason for this in a modern a/c and engine?

Just about every 717 Ive seen has some smoke from the drain mast on the engines. Its a known "issue" with the BR715.
