for cheap operations and frugal fuel consumption.........a330
for long haul etops and nice handling............b777
a330 hardware sucks, software is overengineered and possible human interphase issues.
b777 superior hardware and redundant systems for etops. software less engineered but vastly superior maintenance computer making online maintenance a breeze. autoflight and flight management systems not so fancy but instinctive to use.

The AN-2 didn't rub out Glenn Miller, but they did both have a single engine. I want to know, and I want to know NOW, how a 757 compares to a BAC 1-11 500!

A similar comparison....
An analogous comparison would be the B-757 vs. the A-321. Never flew the 757, but, talking to those who have flown both aircraft, the common
response: no comparison. But, Airbus says otherwise.
With regard to the line maintenance subject, I have no experience with the B-777, but I can tell you the Airbus is very easy to maintain on the line. Granted, the Bus breaks a lot, but, if you have the replacement
"boxes", it, in most cases, takes longer to fill out the paperwork for the repair than for the repair itself.
And, the line machanics don't have to have a whole lot of system knowledge to fix it. The CFDS BITE system pretty much spells out the problem for you. All that is left to do is "plug 'n play".....remove one box,
and replace it with another. Doesn't get much easier than that.

The 744 allows you to do limited line tests from the CMC and gives you instructions to do simple line tests similiar to the Airbus CMDU. The A380 has a dedicated onboard maintenance area in the cockpit where you can access the whole AMM. The system hyperlinks you with the relevant AMM page alongside the fault.

Well I think the answer is one is incredibly expensive (it costs millions), very heavy, it makes an amazing noise constantly waking people and goes on like forever and ever, and the other is an aeroplane.
