Boeing 757 Charter Ops
Hi all
I have a question regarding 757 Charter operations from the UK to holiday hotspots. I appreciate that many of these destinations (esp. in Greece) have short runways and hot weather. I assumed that these would be limiting factors on aircraft ops, but my question is how significant are MZFW restrictions on Boeing 757's?
A quick mental sum yielded this info taking a First Choice 757 as an example;
- Seat config. 233 passengers
- Charter adult weight for planning purposes: 76kgs
- International baggage weight for planning purposes: 13kg
- Payload: 20,737kgs
- OEW: 62,100kgs
Gives a ZFW of 82,837kgs
MZFW: 83,450kgs
So this is pretty close (I acknowledge that 100% adult occupancy may be an aggressive assumption). Im aware that Thomson Airways sells 2,500kgs of cargo capacity through its ANA cargo - how often is cargo carried to the holiday hotspots? The above calcs suggest not a lot of room would be left.
I would be really interested in any insight and discussion topics on the above.

I dunno where you got the DOM from, but the 757's i fly are nearer 60 tonnes DOM rather than 62 Tonnes.
I've never seen a 757 MZFM restricted on any thing i've done. Max TOW, occasionally, on some of the lighter (108 tonnes) 75's, but not ZFM. In fact i've done quite a few flights to Africa where the limitation has been that the hold is physically full - we've still got weight to play with but the guys cannot squeeze anything else in!
The 757 has got so much take off and climb performance that even on short runways, unless its a very hot day, Structural take off mass rules the day, rather than performance limited.

Thanks for your reply. I took the DOM from the Boeing 757 Airport PLanning Manual from Boeing. It seems the DOM is 62,100 for 113,400 MTOW aircraft and the 60,000 DOM you talk of for 108,850 MTOW aircraft. Not sure if these are gospil though...

we've got some 115 tonne aircraft with 59.5 DOM so it really depends on the cabin config as well as a number of other factors!
I've not got a huge amount of experience with the 'bucket and spade' charter stuff, but I'd guess that ZFM limitations are very rare.

Our 757-200s have DOMs of between 60.0t and 61.4t, and we operate a variety of 104.3t, 113.4t and 115.7t MTOW models in both 235Y and 187Y configs.
Interestingly the 115.7t MTOW aircraft has the lowest DOM of 60.0t.

IN about 8k hours of flying the 757, I think I have never been limited by MZFW (85,2 t) on the passenger airplane. We are out of belly space before that happens.
Our 757s DOW initially was around 59t. But like humans tend to do they have added some weight over the years... most now around 61-62t.
Probably less of an increase percentage wise, than I have suffered personally
