LHR 09L Displaced Threshold

Any comments please as to why LHR 09L touchdown is displaced by approximately 1,000 feet?

Curious. Thanks.

Windsor Castle?

Just a guess though heaven knows why the monarchy built it so close to LHR.

Presumably obstacles on the approach like castles, roads etc. 09R is also displaced, but it's slightly further from castle, so probably roads etc.

The correct and more serious answer can be found in CAP168 Licensing of Aerodromes. Chapter 3 gives you the physical requirements and Chapter 4 the Treatment of Obstacles. The acronym APPS is relevant in this case.
