Relationship Mic Gain to Radio transmission

Can anyone enlighten me as to the relationship between Mic gain and the radio transmission. The Mic on most headsets gas a slight adjustment available to the gain setting. If I turn it down to try to cut out some of the ambient noise that it picks up what effect does that have to the radio transmission ? Is that of a lesser quality / readability or of no significant effect ?

Any takers for this one ? ;-)

Less gain = less voice for modulation. You can use the Intercomm position to adjust mic gain. Have someone else do the flying and make adjustments while talking so you get the loudest intercom without engine/wind noise.
