Rules say to continue in VMC and land on nearest suitable airport.
BUT... be sure you can maintain VMC.
Otherwise you have to continue in IFR, setting 7600 and follow the FPL after a certain timing according to the different scenarios.
Fly to the appropriate designated navigation aid for destn apt (which are detailed in the EMERGENCY section, "ICAO differences or state special procedure"), perform an instrument app and land, if possible, within 30' after ETA.
Font : Jeppesen, EMERGENCY, page E-22.
Hope this help.
P.S. - Sometimes shortcircuit can do that happen regardless of the acft you are seated on.

Well Henry that's the theory...in reality, especially nowadays, you will be intercepted and then what to do isn't your problem anymore since you will be probably told or actually shown.
So have your interception signals table ready for use!

Let's see: 747: 3 VHF radios, 2 HF radios, 4 generators, 1 battery. . . and you're going to lose all that?

HenryVIII,
if it happens in the middle of the ocean also the "maintain VMC and land at the nearest suitable airport" rule goes out the window, and be sure that if you do find a VMC airport "within hours" you will surely be intercepted well before you start the descent checklist....
If you are unlucky enough to lose radio coms on the top of the Himalayas you can be 100% sure you'll be in good company in matter of minutes since the Himalayan mountain range stetches across hot spots like Afghanistan,Pakistan,India and China......
