GPS Compass Displays

Do most hand held GPS compass displays indicate true or magnetic track?

(I understand some are loaded with magnetic variation but I have a new Garmin 496 and the instruction manual appears quite non-discript on this)

What's the latest on the world going to true as a datum rather than magnetic?

Regards

496 works with auto mag var, true, grid and user mag var as you wish. See page 121. My own GPS has the same options but names them differently.

Thanks Bushfiva, I hadn't found that gen on p121. I'm trying to put forward a briefing on navigation for glider pilots this winter and wanted to highlight some of the problems with GPS.

Best regards
