Gyro Heading Indicators

Why is it that in this day and age most planes still have heading incidators that need to be reset all the time?

I've always found it very irritating when it's quite turbulent because the compass never seems to be still enough to take an accurate reading.

Why is it that only on quite complex and expensive planes the HI is slaved to the compass?
