LRC use in Boeing FMC

Hi all
hope I am in the right place for this question. When do pilots use the "LRC" mode in Boeing FMCs and what sort of difference (in comparison to "ECON" mode) does this make to fuel burn, mach number, etc (espically in the 737 family)? Also what would be the cost index used by a "average" low fares airline using a 737?( A rough idea would do!).
Thanks for the help.
