Were talking about this at the flying school the other day - reckon the %age is about the same too (we figured a third roughly)...

Aren't lefties supposed to have better spatial awareness?

Lefties rule

Because lefties are apparently more intelligent on average, so why loads of piots are left handed i dont know surely they should have become techies....

On the flip side lefties die on average 10 years before righties

The reason we die an average 10 years sooner, is that it is dangerous being left-handed in a right-handed world.

The number of people that die trying to use power drills, chainsaws, scissors, tin openers, revolving doors etc brings down the average life expectancy! ( I've seen the statistics somewhere or other)

Can't find the article right now but there's more;
Higher percentage of pilots are the first born child,
Higher percentage of pilots have fear of heights, something like 27% vs 7% of the population.

Irrelevant. I land it with me feet. Don't know what 'foot' I am - can you tell that anyway?

since you ask, yes. Everyone has a preferred hand ,foot , eye. Usually the same side for all 3. Have fun, and enjoy watching Nadal win the US open.

How long before we start to see it appearing on application forms then?

Are you left handed?
Are you the first born?

I'm neither

The word 'sinister' comes from the Latin for left. Food for thought???!!

Delighted that this 'fact' has been proven and would like to see the paper if a reference can be found. I came to this conclusion many moons ago whilst still in the RAF; even wrote to some bod who was conducting a study into flightcrew health (or something) about my observations but never did get any feedback. It was quite clear that not only the aircrew but also air traffickers (and possibly fighter controllers - but they were all strange anyway) had a far greater proportion of left-handers amongst them than the general population.

Me - write left, play golf/cricket left, racquet sports right, throw right, kick both - lots of crossed wires somewhere. Oh, and first born.

Yeah good point revik - I'm not as leftie as some. I can fly either handed, play snooker, darts, 10-pin bowling, racquet sports left-handed. Play golf, guitar right-handed... Incidentally, Barclays Bank supply me with left-handed cheque books - cool eh?

Does anyone know if that shop in Soho for lefthanded goods (scissors etc etc) is still there?

Edit: Answered my own question - it is: http://www.anythingleft-handed.co.uk/

I'm right handed, not the firstborn and don't have a fear of hieghts (that I'm aware of). But when I'm flying a Robin I always have my left hand on the column and use the right hand throttle. Is this something that comes about as a result of learning to fly on a Warrior?
