What exactly is the GPU on a 737 etc?

A quick question. I know this probably sounds stupid to ask but having done some travelling recently, bored as usual, I could see heat haze from a tail exhaust and I was wondering what exactly provides the power for the a/c ie 737, when on the stand with no External Ground Power unit hooked up. Is it another small turbine engine shoved up it's back end and if so, what is the sort of type and power output from it etc? Any info gratefully received.

Just my inquisitive nature getting the better of me. was going to ask one of the pilots on the a/c but he probably wouldn't know!! he he.

Thanks,
KMS
