He is flying a dash 400 which deploys the spoilers on touch down for lift dumping when the main gear is WOW. If I remember rightly the 100 series also had this system but it was deleted from the 200/300.

Have flown the 200, 300 and 400. I did find the 400 hard to get a good landing out of, but flew with a lot of Captains who could manage fairly consistantly good ones. Here's what I learnt....
If one sector ends in a place with a wet runway ask to fly that sector - you can nearly always get a nice landing on a wet runway.
If the runway is long enough do a flap 15 landing.
Again if the runway is long enough add about 2 knots onto your approach speed.
Don't take the power off until your main gear touches down.
The 200 and 300 were easier to land well, but I preferrred the 400 in the end. The Performance is so much better and the ROC after take-off is comparable if not better than some small jets. All of them were great in a x-wind because you could put nearly as much wing down as you liked to counter the wind in the flare.
I loved it on the Dash - fantastic aircraft to fly despite some strange quirks on the APFDS as already pointed out.

I have flown all types of DHC8 and found that the q400 is a harder aircraft to land due to the loss of induced lift from the 6 bladed props in the flare. You have to land this aircraft with power ON otherwise the results can be quite amusing!!!
Its a great aircraft to learn your trade on, and you will find a coversion onto a jet quite simple after flying the Q400!

I agree, with the tyres inflated fully and the oleos at full pressure, the stalks of gear can make firm landings seem normal; flap 15 (when performance allows) and a little power on for the flare certainly makes for better landings. Osaka Joe sums it up nicely re crosswinds - the aicraft has to be absolutely straight with just the correct amount of wing-down as any sideslip will vibrate through the fuselage very unforgivingly!
All-in-all I like the Q400 very much, quick, excellent ROC, EFIS (not autothrottle but a good way towards airbus) and modern. Its true that we can get the toilet fumes though.
