737NG End of decent

The 737NG 10.6 FMC update now has an automatic end of descent point. The previous update did not have this feature and only had an EODP if you put in a STAR or manually entered one.
My question is: what are the criteria that the FMC uses to calculate its end of descent point and speed? There seems to be no explaination. None of my Boeing manuals make any reference to it and the Smith CD ROM supplied when the 10.6 update came out is equally unhelpful. Any ideas?
