I accept your point about taxation (it's just my free market/anti- government personality coming out again
We do need to be somewhat careful with implementing taxation but the government will inevitably waste this opportunity after all they are politicians (people who failed grave robbing academy and went into politics - okay just a joke).
Tax is merely a single tool and in order to achieve an integrated and effective game-plan we need to invoke awareness, willingness and education within the public so that can actaully 'see' what their environmental cost and/or expenditure really is.
However returning to the initial argument of aviation focused tax well that's difficult because as an industry aviation is too big a target that isn't as nimble or flexible as some others. Therefore as a consequence politicians can 'beat up' the industry more than is required simply on the basis of a whipping boy.
But I agree even though I love avaition, free markets and the environment we need to scratch heads and start moving ahead.

HBC et al,
Rather than take the view fed to you in the media, why don't you do some research of your own? You may be surprised by what you find.
And on that subject the last two papers (scientific) I read both debunked the global warming theory. One called into question the "hockey stick" diagram used by the IPC and the other has evidence that we could be on the verge of a mini ice age.
Also, just as a parting shot, since when have BA or national governments been experts on climate change? The IPC only heard what it wanted to hear. Global warming is here (maybe!) but there is absolutely nothing we can do about it.

According to the guys at Cranfield working various aspects of this problem emissions dumped below the tropopause are subject to weather and washing and are nothing like so dangerous as those inserted into the stratosphere where there is neglible mixing and washing.
They have suggested to me that the first ‘mandatory’ step is likely to be getting cargo aircraft down below the trop then later pax ops.
