What is assumed temperature?

Been a few years since I flew a plane that called for "flex" power for takeoff, but this is what I remember... Flex power is calculated by assumed temp, and then used to prolong engine life (reduced thrust settings on takeoff). Is that correct? What am I missing? Thanks!
