Time for another "silly" question!!

Why is the interior lights in airliners dimmed during take off and landing??

Is this company or aircraft specific??

Asked the same question and was told the reason was to allow the pax eyes to be accustomed to the dark interior. Therefore if an evacuation is required for any reason, people are not pawing around in the dark... Practical answer I thought but why allow reading lights then????
