WX Codes revisited

Hello All

2005/01/31 09:40
VABB 310940Z 28010KT 5000 FU FEW020 28/14 Q1012 NOSIG

The above is a METAR for Mumbai.
It cals for visibility 5000 meters in FU. Does FU mean Smoke or fumes? Also, has the letter 'K' ever been used as a qualifier for Smoke?

Thanx

FU is smoke, not sure you can see fumes! Never heard of K being used.

I think that "K" used to be the symbol for smoke in a Canadian "station actual" report AKA: "SA".

FU comes from the French word "Fumer" which means smoke for those who like to know.

VRThomas:

Where did you get the 'K' in the SA? Just checking my C.A.I.P. here and no such thing as 'K' for smoke in SA reports.

Snot box, (nice tag),

I am relying on my recollection of pre-CARs.

If anyone can dig up an AIP from about 10 years ago they may find it.

When the new CARs came out there were changes such as this made to reflect rules more in line with ICAO standards and practices.
