DU in WTC Crash 767's?
Rumour is now circulating that there was depleted uraniun in the 767's that crashed into the WTC. I know that there was DU in the EL AL 747 that crashed in Amsterdam, but I didnt think that 767's carried any.. .. .Could somebody set me straight on this and quash this rumour if there is no basis to it.

Ironically, the most common use of Depleted Uranium is in "conventional" (non nuclear)warheads, such as artillery shells, etc....

RTFI,. .Know where you're from. In a fire like that DU can create some nasty by-products.. .Can't "quash" what you say but I think DU was in 747's, TriStars and dc 10's but not sure about the 757/767. Think it was Tritium not tungsten. Used as a counterweight at the back.

Yes, it made the news because of the polution that was being given off from the remains of the WTC. Some firepersons (firepeople?) are complaining of respiritory problems.. .. .I didnt think the 767 had any DU in it but it's still in 747's? if it is to be used as a counterweight there must be tonnes of it, i can recall a fair few burnt out classics, is there any evidence (apart from Amsterdam) that it has caused any harm . .. .yes i guess thats the least of your problems in an emergency situation but i ask anyway

Sadly, I'm not suprised people are complaining of respiratory problems after seeing all that dust that was produced, probably a lot of it was asbestos and sprayed insulation used for fireproofing.. .I would have thought that all the DU would have been removed before those old airframes (classics) were torched.. .BTW wasn't the problems in the aftermath of the Amsterdam crash caused by some of the (dubious???) freight that was being carried?. .. .edited for spelling!. . . . [ 21 March 2002, 17:25: Message edited by: gas path ]
