Post New GPS augmentation technology

Hi, all. .. .I've been reading about WAAS, EGNOS and MSAS, a sea of acroynms from which the fish of much better satellite nav is supposedly to be pulled. While it seems that these are all interoperable, I haven't been able to find out whether a WAAS receiver will be able to work with EGNOS without modification, or whether it'll have to be specifically WAAS/EGNOS compatible. You can already buy WAAS GPS in the US, but I'll hold off on the next upgrade if they won't work when EGPOS goes live in 2004.. .. .Anyone know?. .. .R

Hi SLF,. .. .Yes, WAAS, EGNOS and MSAS are all interoperable. A receiver that works with one will work with the others (thats the plan anyway ). All of these systems (and the new Indian version called GAGAN) are all Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) to use the generic ICAO term. . .. .At the moment EGNOS is not operational, but the EGNOS Test Bed is, its known as ESTB and is a cut down version of the full system to allow trials to take place. Some of the current WAAS handhelds will work with ESTB, others won't. Thats because ESTB broadcasts a 'don't use' message to prevent users utilising what could potentially be misleading guidance but some (non aviation) receivers ignore this message.. .. .Here is the URL for the ESTB website:. .. . ESTB Web Page . .. .Hope this helps

For true enlightenment, go first to the Royal Institute of Navigation website at . .. .http://www.rin.org.uk. .. .then go through to the Satellite Navigation Forum and post the question there. Be warned though, they're very straight laced and take their navigation seriously. Wind-ups are unwelcome.... .. .**********************************. .Through difficulties to the cinema

SLF,. .. .If you know anyone who is a fellow or member of RIN try and get your hands on the Jan/Feb 2002 issue of "Navigation News", there is a good article "Do we still need DGPS?" which was reprinted from International Ocean Systems.. .. .While I agree with Never Losts comments that the long term aim is to have all these systems interoperable, I am more inclined at this stage to say that older WAAS receivers will not necessarily be EGNOS capable. The newer EGNOS and WAAS receivers generally are both WAAS&EGNOS capable.. .. .These systems are still “works in progress”, 2004-2005 when they are online no doubt aircraft and ships will be able go seamlessly between systems.. .. .Regards. .. .Z
