Econo high speed climbs are more efficient than say L/D max angle climbs. High speed descents allow a steeper gradient. It's all trade-offs -- fuel burn vs. less time in the air. Airlines have their own ideas of how to minimize costs, but even then, sometimes the object is speed and not minimal costs.
