Question Synchronising DI

Here's a "what if" question for you all :

It's time for the FREDA check, however your leg appears to have taken you through an area of turbulence (light/mild) which there appears to be no end to (you've been flying through it for a good few minutes and there's still no sign of it clearing up). Assume VFR (vis. CAVOK, flying below the dense cloud cover).

How do you go about synchronising the DI ?

If at all possible, avoid northerly instability errors of the magnetic compass. Hold the aircraft wings level and check the DI vs magnetic compass if it's steady enough. Otherwise - leave it well alone and wait for the turbulence to susbside. If you're above 8/8 cloud, fix your position more often by using VOR or VOR/DME fixes and deduce your track that way.

If it really goes to rats, use the 'no compass no gyro' technique when you descend under a radar service.

This is a catch question. Anyone listening on this channel would remember we explained you don't need the DI pointing North-South-East-West. That was just tradition.

You navigate on the GPS so unless the DI is precessing at 5 degrees a minute, it won't matter. However if you insist then adjust the DI to current track or track minus estimated drift That would then be roughly North-relative if you are happier with that.
