Post Temp. inversion and jet engine performance.

Climbing through 1300'out of LAX recently had an EGT exceedence on just one engine (CF6).Engineering reckon it may have been due to a marked temperature inversion. The temp. increased by 15C in about 200ft!This is the most extreme inversion I have yet come across but I believe it is not uncommon at LA.Is this so?Anywhere else?
Also can anyone explain briefly the effect of such an inversion on jet engines.
Thank you all.
