Post B737 Tire Failure

A B737-200 experienced a recapped tire disintegration on the #2 main tire after landing. Pieces of the thread ruptured a hydraulic line causing the loss of the “A” hydraulic system, and did considerable damage to the wheelwell area on the left side of the aircraft. The crew brought the aircraft to a stop on the runway using the remaining hydraulic system and the accumulator. Since the nose wheel steering is supplied by the “A” hydraulic system, the aircraft couldn’t be taxiied off the runway until temporary repairs were made, this closed the runway for 4 hours.

The landing was made using a VREF of 140 Kts. Since the tire limit was 190 Kts and the aircraft was well within the operating weight limits, it was determined that the cause of the damage was the failure of the recapped tire within its normal operating range.

I’m offering this for technical information only and not news.
