Overheard many years later in a car near Dusseldorf:


Former Captain: I had a great career and yes they cancelled my licence and fined me 10,000 euro for that flyby at the end but I was retiring and had a huge pension so it was worth it...
Friend And what about the rest of the crew. They did the same to the FO didn't they...

What exuberance? He had got the permission that in case of a go-around (for which absolutely no permission or explanation or anything is required) he could fly a visual pattern instead of following the standard missed approach procedure. And this is what he did, thereby not exceeding pitch and roll angles for visual maneuvers.

Do you need to ask? Maybe that maneuver would be OK in Panama, but in many countries it'd be unacceptable at an air show, let alone with an aircraft full of pax. The tower video shows how low he was when he passed over the terminals. Cool! Yeah, but a grown-up professional pilot shouldn't fool around like that.

Whether or not they investigated the Royal Air Maroc takeoff is irrelevant.

OK, I'm only an amateur, but most of us when we fly visual patterns climb out straight ahead to a reasonably safe height before turning crosswind!

I have no idea about their SOPs but ours say "no turns below 400ft". That would be 120m and I guess he was not lower than that when he turned. But maybe there was a large flock of Canada geese in front of him which made him start the turn a little earlier for the sake of wildlife preservation. Who knows.

The article says "Der Deutschen Flugsicherung zufolge habe der Pilot vor dem Landeanflug im Falle eines Durchstartmanövers die Richtung angefragt. Die Lotsen hätten daraufhin die Linkskurve freigegeben. In welcher Höhe der Pilot schließlich abdrehe, liege in seiner eigenen Verantwortung."

Which roughly translates to: According to DFS (German ATC) the pilot had queried the direction in the case of a go-around before initiating the approach. The controllers granted permission for a left turn. The height at which the pilot starts the turn is his own responsibility."

Somewhat lower ... Düsseldorf tower is 85m high (it says here) and they're looking down at him as he turns ...
