When aircraft are air-to-air refuelling, do the receivers have transponders on? I see the RAF have a tanker up at the moment, flying racetracks off the Scottish coast. He was up there the other night as well, but no sign of any receivers.

When aircraft are flying close formation only the lead aircraft has the transponder turned on.

Fair point; thanks. However, would one expect to see the receivers on their way in and out? I only ask because I'm new to playing with this FlightRadar24 thing. Sad really.

In-service Tornados and Typhoons are suppressed on FR24, so you won't see them even with their Mode-S on.
You may occasionally see tracks for Typhoons out of Warton on BAE test-flights. |
Rubbish ! Loads of Lossiemouth and Coningsby based Typhoons have shown on FR24 - but never when heading for refuelling tankers.

Rubbish ! Loads of Lossiemouth and Coningsby based Typhoons have shown on FR24 - but never when heading for refuelling tankers. Here's a starter: 29 (R) Sqn ZK338 was up today over the Irish Sea as WARLORD 42 , active on Mode-S. FL250 09:05 UTC. Plenty of other RAF assets shown but not that one.
