Those venerable AN-12's sure do get around and do make their presence known due to the sound footprint! Amazing to think that many are approaching half a century in the air......Still they do the job, are obviously economically viable, so long may they continue.

One flew over the North Midlands a few years ago and woke me up. It also woke most of Manchester up as well as it was the lead story in their news paper the following evening.

They burn well if they catch on fire. I was sat at Leipzig when one went up in flames due to a faulty APU about 7 years ago, we sat on the flight deck of our 757 waiting for the airport to reopen and watched the aluminium oxide fall like snow from the sky.

Fortunately the crew of the offending AN12 all got out safely, the thousands of day old chicks making up their cargo were not so lucky.
