Nice bit of advertising if a bit costly. Any ideas on why?

Not the first time. Check out their skywriting while doing the initial ETOPS testing for their 787.

At least someone at Boeing has a sense of humour!

A lot of the FAA required flight testing consists of little more than flying around at various cruise conditions for hours (e.g. the ETOPS testing KR referenced).
I don't know anything specific about this flight, but if you need to go fly around for several hours to please the feds, why not do something interesting...
