Just in the garden and heard what sounded like the neighbour dragging a tarpaulin across the patio, but it was clearly a jet aircraft (I think!), that was there and gone before I could see it.

It happened twice more, they seemed to be following the route of landing aircraft, i.e. eastbound into 9L

Weird!

Maybe I should check see if he is dragging tarpaulins around.....

If close the sound of wingtip vortices is exactly what you described, but I've no idea how close you need to be to get them.

EGLD your profile says you live in London so you would see traffic landing on westerlies and, as you say, they're on easterlies....?
