STAR assignment

As I understand, often the STAR to be used is not known at departure. When during the flight do you get information about what STAR to program, and form where/who do you get that information?

A STAR is always on the flight plan, however it can change at anytime. You just adapt to the given situation, not a big deal to change.

ATIS, the last Center controller, or first Approach controller are the normal sources.
