One of the Ramp Agents told me that it was apparently smoke in the cockpit of one of the planes on the Cargo apron.
Coincidentally the new (old) ATR72 of West Air appeared to be undergoing some fairly extensive maintenance this evening. Wonder if that was the culprit.
