I was told that it was due to low-ish passenger loads, however I am not aware of any figures to support this.
FWIW, with Malaysian Airlines starting their A.380 service in July, I would imagine that any extra passengers will be easily carried by that, so maybe there is no need for a second airline to serve the route.

The loads were always good but the yield was poor.

Qantas has stopped flying to Kuala Lumpur a long time ago, leaving Malaysian Airlines and Air Asis x the only operators KUL - various Australian ports. And even then, Malaysian Airlines finds it hard to make a profit.
