Up to 10,000 plane-spotters are expected to descend on Manchester Airport to catch a glimpse of one of the world’s most luxurious aircraft.
The 787 Dreamliner will land in the city for the first time next Monday night – and plans are being put in place to celebrate its arrival.

As revealed last week in the M.E.N., the jet will make a pitstop at the airport as part of a world tour. Airport bosses have announced details of special arrangements to welcome the jet. They expect the majority of spotters to turn out on Tuesday – when the plane will take-off for a mid-morning short demonstration flight over Britain.

The flight will be operated by Thomson Airways, Boeing’s first UK customer for the aircraft, and airport workers expect the day to rival the arrival of the A380 – the world’s largest passenger plane – which touched down here for the first time in September 2010.

Preparations are already in full swing for the visit – with everything from an exhibition at the runway visitor park, where most of the enthusiasts will gather, to aviation experts being on hand to answer questions and explain why the Dreamliner is such a unique aircraft.

The park will also stay open late on Monday night to accommodate the crowds. The plane is expected to touch down on the runway at about 7pm.

The Dreamliner has a special cabin with windows that can be dimmed and it can hold more than 250 passengers.

At more than 55 feet tall and with a wingspan of 197ft, it is one of the biggest planes in the world. Its green technology also means air in the cabin is cleaner and reduces motion sickness.

The plane will come to Manchester after starting its journey in Seattle. It will first stop at Heathrow, then Manchester, before heading on a tour of Europe. Andrew Harrison, chief operating officer for the Manchester Airports Group, said:

“It will be really exciting to finally see the Dreamliner touch down on our runway and we’re planning to pull out all the stops to give her thousands of local fans the chance to see her.”

I think the DL is a great piece of tech now it is finally here, but do these developments really make it prime fodder for spotters? It is neither the biggest nor the fastest, 10k sounds a little optimistic for me for what is very much a mid-table jet, perfect though it may be for regional markets like Manchester.

Well in cattle it probably is, but why does that make it spottable?

IMO it's quite a boring looking aircraft, doesn't look special, and will be a run of the mill airliner that nobody will take a second glance at in a few years.

10,000 'spotters' is quite optimistic.

Saw the ANA example at FRA whilst I was there in transit a few weeks back. Not a particularly remarkable a/c to look at to be honest. Give me a Connie or DC-7 any day.

10000 spotters seems a bit OTT. The aircraft hasn't got the same draw as Concorde/A380...

Calm Down, Calm Down.
It's only a pointy-nosed 767 made of plastic.

What the more serious among us really want to see is the plane that's bringing in the 10,000 spotters!

Saw one of ANA's in Frankfurt the other day, to be honest if it didn't say 787 down the side in big writing you would have taxied past without even noticing. Nice aircraft I am sure but hardly special to look at.

Quite agree ....... or a IL-18, a Deux Ponts, a Dak, a CV880/990, a Caravelle, or one of many many more interesting machines ................

One has to admire Boeing's PR people. Eversince they came up with the optimistic name [DL ] they have tried to get that name imprinted into and onto everything. But - it's just another big, fat twin to carry as much as possible as far as possible. Which is all well and good and what the company have to do.

But it scores, I suggest, Zero on the styling scale which their wavy blue lines cannot disguise. Few pax know what a/c they are on and are never going to make their ticket purchases based on the a/c.

Once again, as remarked, journos accept the sales fit-out of how the cabins might look, if the carrier wanted fewer seats. it reminds me of the nonsense about shower rooms and many bars and lounge areas in countless PR statements down the decades.

Peeps buy the cheapest possible seat and everyone knows that!

Saw one (N780BA?) zotting up towards Strumble a few weeks ago, from a distance unfortunately! Thank you FR24...

Are they regular visitors to Europe?

Saw a couple at EGPK last year.
One overflew Mt. Belzoni last year out of EGSS heading State-side.. Held down at FL280 by 2 EZY A319's in trail at 290. It was contrailing, looked superb.

Evanelpus when the Concorde and the A380 came thats what the estimated turnout was to see them.

So the AVP can take that capacity, but the mounds will be squashed if the new fence forces people onto them.

too right zooker

Why should it obwan?
