English Channel this afternoon

Any of you guys help me out with this query ? I was out for my traditional Xmas eve walk today from Dover to Deal (gets me out of the way, and a pub on the way may or may not be involved) when I saw a formation of at least 5 piston engined aircraft heading west up the Channel a few miles off St Margarets Bay. Most intrigued to find out what they were....

Happy Christmas, and please spare a though for me when I notch up another year on god's earth at midnight tonight
