Identifying Aircraft on an ipad2
Hello fellow Spotters. I see quite a few airliners from my home - con-trailing, medium level and fairly low. I'm thinking of getting an ipad 2 and believe there is an 'app' which will give me the details of the flight. Anyone know its name? We also get Mirage 2000s in ones, twos and threes practicing (I think) air combat tactics. Great stuff. (The last sentence is just a bit of chatter). ps 'Home' is Southern France, in the Ardeche. Hope someone can help, 'til then, adieu.

Could be flightradar24, i have that on my iPhone. Quite neat actually, it even sports an augmented reality view where you point phone with its camera at an aircraft and see the info-tag floating alongside, one click and you get more infos. However i doubt you will see those Mirages as it depends on Mode-S transponders and state aircraft (read military) do not need to carry them.

I have an iPad2 and the FlightRadar24 app is one of the best.
You can see the coverage and aircraft displays on their website without the need for an iPad.
Flightradar24.com - Live Flight Tracker!
The iPad app uses the same data, so what you see there, you will see on the iPad.

How does that work, given that an aeroplane is moving and there could be many aircraft in the same area? Also, information from sites such as FlightRadar is often delayed by several minutes.

It's a bit of a toy of course, but generally ADS-B data is send around once a second, the rest depends on network speed. In augmented reality view the program doesn't have to render a map, it simply shows the view from the devices camera and only needs the information of planes in that cone of view.
It works surprisingly well even near somewhat busy airports like frankfurt, however best of course with a wifi connection of course.

While we're on the subject any one know of the app which gives arrival times at over 3,000 airpots, i've seen it on a display IPad 2 in Curry's ?

I use Planefinder HD and I think it just shades FlightRadar24. They are both excellent APPS and it saves you buying something like an Air Nav Radarbox or SBS-1.
