Please can a pro confirm??

Hiya,

I have some sim time booked on an A320 in the near future and I've requested to fly from EDDF to EDDT, flying the Akudi 3Z star/approach to rwy 08L. Naturally I've been practicing the flight on my home flight sim but I would like to make sure I'm flying the approach correctly, and if not, please can someone tell me the correct way? To try and make this brief, according to the chart, I'm at 4000' reaching KLF, turn left to hdg 315 until crossing R017 which is 28 miles from LWB then turn left to intercept the localiser. It seems to work just fine on my sim at home, but is this the correct way to do it?? Just to finish off, at localiser capture, and with the glideslope becoming active engage app and autopilot down to minimums. As said, it works ok on my home sim. Any advice of course will be appreciated.

Many thanks

Rory

The German AIP chart (2009) shows the 283 radial from KLF to LERSI, then the 017 inbound LWB to intercept. I cannot see a 315 radial from KLF? Personally I would ask for a LERSI arrival!

Following up on the previous post, and with the big proviso that I am not a pro, let me start by assuming that you want to follow as "realistic" a route as possible. Following the DLH flights on this route this afternoon, they have all had a CRZ of FL290. Using this figure, Eurocontrol's CFMU provides the following route:

TOBAK7E TOBAK N858 SWALM T201 ROBEL T200 RUDAK RUDAK4Z

The SID is for RWY7C/7R (7C preferential) and the STAR is for RWY 8L in line with today's weather so it fits in with your planned approach into EDDT.

BOAC suggested an approach from LERSI and this is part of the RUDAK STAR. Leave RUDAK on 339 degrees magnetic to LERSI. From LERSI, follow the LWB radial 197 to LWB25.6 then turn right to intercept the ILS at LIGBA (at 3000').

Your preferred STAR, via AKUDI takes the aeroplane a little further to the east than is necessary (although it would be fine for an approach in the opposite direction) and so adds a few track miles to the fuel bill.

You mention being at 4000' at KLF. There is a similar chart entry at LERSI but neither mean that all aircraft must be down to this altitude by then. In fact the only restriction is that you must be at FL100 or below by LERSI. The distance between LERSI and LIGBA is about 27 miles so, with a 3 degree slope, you could lose just over 8000 feet between these two points so you could be at the maximum allowed level of FL100 and still comfortably make the 3000' at LIGBA on a 3 degree flight path angle.

I hope this helps and hope you enjoy the sim ride.

Many thanks to both of you for replying. Firstly, although the way I was flying the approach worked fine, I had in fact mis-read the chart and had omitted to fly to LERSI, which is the IAF, so thankyou BOAC. Correcting the error and flying to LERSI and then to 25.6 miles from LWB and turning to intercept the localiser worked faultlessly. StainesFS, you're also right, my preferred star does take the aircraft too far out and I will consider modifying my request when I visit the sim. Again, many thanks.

Regards,

Rory
