Aircraft apparently weaving along UL9 is not an uncommon sight on westbound trailing traffic at CPT/WOD as there are quite a few waypoints between Woodley and Lyneham that will be overflown if the aircraft is on "own nav" down the airway.

Not often seen eastbound as traffic usually cleared direct BIG,DVR or KOK.

40612... I'm fully familiar with slight heading changesa long the airways, but this was something wholly different. Between heading changes, trails will usually be fairly straight. On this occasion, it looked like someone had been at it with and egg whisk!

L.F.I.S.S. Long flight induced sleep syndrome ?
Seriously could a non trailing aircraft have crossed the path and left wake disturbance, not enough to upset a B. 744 but enough to move condensation droplets ? Or could some weather anomaly have shown up on the radar and encouraged the pilot to take avoiding action ?
Be lucky

The 747's track remained constant throughout; just the contrail was blown around. See earlier postings for some worthwhile suggestions.

Reading this brought back amemory of some six weeks ago, while at work on the airfield at Bristol myself and a work colleague noticed a high altitude con trail East to West obviously o/b north America ish.Any way it was high altitude grey skies, visibility was unlimited and the air was still frosty clear with the sun up, with a quick glance at the contrail there appeared to be a feint dark line in front of the aircraft, after watching it for a few minutes the aircraft was actualy following this dark line wich extended out of sight,My colleague said it must have been the shadow cast by the sun, however the sun was not in a position to cast it, if it was a shadow wich i doubt.I have only ever seen it once before and again it was on frosty clear day with high altitude grey skies, any idea what caused these forward extended con trail almost guide rails, possibly Heathrow Director can come up with the answer - Apologies if this all goes into one paragraph, despite me typing in paragraphs, that another mystery if someone has the answer to that as well

<<however the sun was not in a position to cast it,>>

But up at 40,000 ft it may possibly have been? I have seen such "forward" trails on many occasions but each time they were due to shadows being cast on very thin upper cloud..
