United emergency landing due to pilot's spilt coffee

Pilot's spilt coffee behind Toronto emergency landing - CTV News

A probe has found that a pilot's spilt coffee was behind the emergency landing of a United Airlines flight at Toronto's Lester B. Pearson Airport Monday night, when the liquid triggered an emergency hijacking call.

A Transport Canada investigation found that the commanding pilot accidently set off the emergency code after spilling coffee on the Boeing 777's radio equipment.

The flight, from Chicago to Germany, made the emergency landing at about 10 p.m. Monday night.

The plane landed without incident or injury to any of its 241 passengers.

What kind of sensor is that?

Is it supposed to sense pilots bleeding all over their controls or what?

As suspected, there is slightly more to the story than what the headlines suggest:
Incident: United Airlines B772 near Toronto on Jan 3rd 2011, spilled coffee causes loss of communication

every pilot should watch "fate is the hunter and all the way through without knowing ''who done it"
...but we'll have a pilot shortage when viewers laugh themselves to death upon seeing the "airliner"!

(BTW - The book is much better )

United Airlines unscheduled stop for coffee!

"A pilot's spilled coffee accidentally triggered a hijacking alert and caused a United Airlines flight from Chicago to Frankfurt to make an unscheduled stop in Canada. A Transport Canada report said United Flight 940 was diverted to Toronto late on Monday."

That ''airliner'' served a purpose...it was fictional so there was no lawsuit by boeing or douglas etc.

if you stop watching this film at the first sight of the ''airliner'' you are missing out.

CNN , Wolf Blitzer, is going to do a piece on this incident in just a few minutes

Why is there such paranoia about the use of electronic gadgets in the cabin, even though decades of experience have proved that they are harmless, if pilots are still allowed to carry beverages onto the flight deck, where a spill into millions of dollars' worth of avionics can cause problems like this?

Spilt Coffee Causes Problems....

CTV in Canada is reporting this:

Pilot's spilt coffee behind Toronto emergency landing - CTV News

How unprofessional! How many times have I seen supposedly well seasoned pilots accepting fluids and food, across the center-stand of this airplane knowing full while that all the major electronics are located here.

Absolutely no excuses for this!

Coffee spill causes diversion of United Airlines B777

Spilled coffee seems to have found its way into the transponder select panel and untimately caused the airplane to divert. Read the story here:

Surely all it takes is to issue coffee to the flight deck in kids spill proof mugs! Costs pennies and saves the inevitable spills. Coffee will taste the same! No equipment will be damaged.

It is my understanding, at least on the RAF VC10 fleet, that all beverages should be passed to the pilots either over the left shoulder, (Captain), or right, (Co).

One might ask, given that the spilling of liquids over the centre console is a known hazard, and that regulators and manufacturers should have systems in place which design out the risk, why are the consequences of spilling drinks potentially so severe?

Having had hot coffee spilt over my left shoulder by cabin crew using the Malcolm McLaren (RIP) Buffalo Girl technique ('round the outside'), I went back to carefully accepting drinks where I can see what I'm doing.

The consequences of a spill on the centre console should be designed out.

But then, so should a plethora of other things...

I still do not understand why flight deck liquids are not dispensed in spill proof devices.
Space shuttle crews have to drink from weird packages [they have to], so why can't some bright spark develop a non spill mug for flight decks? Costing a few pennies that will save thousands of pounds. As well as less dry cleaning bills.
