Daz, if you can get a cheap charter flight to Antigua or St Kitts you can connect with LIAT to St Maarten. Also, KLM and AIR France fly into SXM, sometimes have good fares from London via AMS or CDG.

Personally, I don't rate the Sonesta, except for the view and you will have to pay extra for Ocean View room.
Take a look at Expedia or similar for a good idea of rates and locations. Depends whether or not you wish to stay in Maho, just for the aircraft and to see them from your room, or just visit on some days/times.
Self catering establishments are very good and several close by - Beachside Villas and La Terasse etc.. Just bear in mind, rates generally double 'in season' Dec - May. Reasonable supermarket in Maho and lots of choices for eating out in Maho and Simpson Bay.
Staying close is not generally noisy as airfield closes 22:00 - 07:00 local. Sometimes the waves are louder!

Just booked my second visit for January.
I would go for a hotel that suits your pocket resonably close to the airport not one of the fancy hotels where you take a chance on the view from your room. To the best of my knowlege you can walk in to the Royal Islander and buy a drink at the bar overlooking the threshold.
I'm booked on the Friday KLM flight which is a rare opportunity to get on an MD11.
Have you considered a day in St Barths while you are there?

Be there myself on Friday 14th January. Our Cruise Ship docks in Philipsburg around 8.00 so we will have most of the day at Maho Beach. Been looking forward to this for a few years now.
