Jet Airways Kingfisher Airlines ground collision at Mumbai
Times of India, Mumbai, Sunday, October 24, 2010
Jet aircraft grazes Kingfisher plane at city airport
Stalled AI Flight Causes Delays
Chinmayi Shalya | TNN
Mumbai: It was a chaotic Friday night at Mumbai airport as two major mishaps threw services out of gear and raised questions about passenger safety. Barely hours after an Air India aircraft from London carrying 272 passengers reported a hydraulic failure immediately after landing at 11.12 pm and blocked key taxiways, a Muscat-bound Jet Airways Boeing 737 grazed a Kingfisher Airbus parked next to it at 2.05 am.
While pushing back, the left wing of the Jet Airways flight 9W540 with more than 90 passengers on board brushed against the left hand stabilizer under the tail of the Kingfisher aircraft. The flyers were asked to disembark as officials assessed the damage. They left over an hour later.
Planes are bound to follow well-designated paths while moving on ground. The near-collision of two planes is a cause for concern in the country’s busiest airport.
The 272 passengers onboard AI-130 also suffered a traumatic hour as they were not allowed to get off until emergency services had extinguished the smoke coming from the landing gear. Two main taxiways were blocked, causing arrivals and departures to be delayed by over an hour. Seven flights were diverted.

2 Planes Graze Past Each Other 3 Hrs After AI Aircraft Reports Hydraulic Failure

Mumbai: In a major and extremely rare mishap that has left officials red in the face, a Jet Airways Boeing-737 scraped past a Kingfisher Airbus that was in parking bay Charli, which is located the near the domestic terminal.
The incident occurred at 2.05 am, Saturday morning, barely three hours after an AI aircraft encountered a hydraulic failure and disrupted flight schedules. The left wing of the Jet Airways flight 9W 540 (which was scheduled to take off for Muscat) while pushing back towards the taxiway brushed against the tail fin of the Kingfisher aircraft, an Airbus A-321, which was parked in Bay 84.
The Jet Airways flight had more than 90 passengers on board when the accident took place. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has grounded both the planes and is conducting an investigation into the matter.
As soon as the Jet pilot realized the error, he signalled the tow tractor to slow down. The pilot immediately reported the collision to airline officials and the airport operator. Officials said that passengers were asked to disembark from the plane immediately.
“The airlines had to assess the extent of damage caused by this mishap, and then decide if the aircraft were fit to fly,” said an official.
A Kingfisher spokesperson said, “The wing tip of the Jet Airways aircraft hit the left hand stabilizer of their aircraft and the extent of damage is being evaluated. There were no guests or crew on board the aircraft.”
A spokesperson with Jet Airways confirmed the incidaccident. “The incident is being investigated in coordination with the authorities,” said the spokesperson.
Officials are relieved that no one was injured. The risk to passengers, however, was minimal, they said. What’s more worrying is the extent of damage caused to the aircraft, “which makes the matter very serious,” said an official. Moreover, aircraft are supposed to follow a well designated path while moving on the ground as well. That two huge planes narrowly avoided collision is cause for concern.
Meanwhile, the Muscat-bound passengers, who were asked to disembar, boarded another plane almost an hour after the accident.
“The passengers were taken back to the terminal while Jet Airways arranged for another aircraft to fly them to Muscat,” said an official. It has been reported that the DGCA—which
has launched an investigation into the matter—has de-rostered three Jet personnel.
A spokesperson for the airlines said: “We have no confirmation on this matter.

sounds like ...
A bunch of pompous @ssholes going to the media to justify their positions. Any captain would have made the aircraft AOG until the engineers had done their thing... oh sorry .. this is India.
