My penny's worth. Start with a second hand DSLR recently saw a D40 for less than £150 then once use to it upgarde. Both Canon and Nikon are great cameras however dont forget that virtually all Nikon Lens' since 1959 will work with any Nikon camera including digitals. I started with a D70 with a kit lens and bought a Sigma 70-300mm have now upgraded to a D90 but only bought a body just transfered the lens' over.
Noticed a few weeks ago that the pro photographers on board P and O now use D90s.
Best of luck try a local Camera club or evening school class they should be able to give lots of help and advice.

Being a Nikon man myself I would go with the D90 as your first camera. I started with a D50, and now have a D300, and don't fee the need to get a D300s or what ever comes next. They are great camera's....If you can afford get the best lens you can. As that's what makes the difference.
I would also recommend flickr for sharing your photos.....
Good luck.
