allegiant air makes emergency landing in flagstaff, arizona
It seems that an MD80 made an emergency landing due to suspected number two engine fire.
7 people injured using slides in emergency evacuation.
no other real data available...unsure about aircraft type, but this airline only flys md80's and a few md90's to my knowledge.

If there was no evidence of fire, why evacuate? If there was an indication of fire, why evacuate from the tailcone area near the eingine that was on fire? Something doesn't compute.

Why evacuate? Because an emergency landing had just been conducted for a fire indication.
Per the article cited above, "The FAA reported, that it is not clear whether there was an engine fire or not." How did you infer from this that there was no evidence of a fire?
--The fire indication was the fault of an overheated constant speed drive in the right engine. The CSD failed to disconnect, which is part of the procedure for a CSD overheat. The crew received a fire indication. The tower reported smoke coming from the engine on shutdown, and the crew elected to stop on the runway and evacuate the aircraft.
