What an awesome looking aircraft, what happened to it, why was it so unsuccessful?

Only one is still flying in private ownership. It took so long to get CAA approval that it became too expensive to make. 53 were originally constructed and all of these were leased, not sold to clients.

Still remember the surprise of seeing the photos of Burt Rutan's 7/8th scale prototype which a friend of mine took at the NBAA event in 1983 (along with the prototype Cessna 208)...
Seeing the odd one on the hoof in the US was always a treat. What a waste to scrap them.
Think the Rutan aircraft still flies also, weren't they using it as a chase for the Virgin Galactic thingy?

You are correct. Saw the Rutan Galactic thingy chase plane 3 tears ago at Oshkosh. I don't remember seeing it when White Knight 2 was there last year tho.
