Air France toilet turnback

Broken toilets force jet to turn back
2010-07-14 22:29

Rio de Janeiro - An Air France plane en route to Paris from Brazil was forced to make an emergency return to Rio de Janeiro because several of the aircraft's toilets did not work, the company said on Wednesday.

The Boeing 747 airplane with 443 passengers on board departed Rio at 16:20 on Tuesday.

Two-and-half hours into the flight, the pilot made a decision to return to Rio after it was learned that at least six of the plane's toilets were out of order.

Air France said that completing the 11-hour flight without properly working facilities would have caused "great discomfort for our passengers."

Upon disembarking, passengers were driven to their homes or put up in Rio area hotels, but many nevertheless described the incident as ""chaotic", "absurd" and "unimaginable".

"We got as far as Recife and had to return to Rio - a roundtrip flight of five hours" said student Gabriela Meira, recounting the ordeal.

"We missed connecting flights. We lost two days of travel on a trip that we scrimped and saved for for more than six years," she told Brazil's GloboNews.

The plane was due to make another attempt to fly to Paris on Wednesday at 23:55 (02:55 GMT).

The incident follows an emergency landing of a Paris-bound Air France jumbo jet in Recife last weekend following a false bomb alert.

A circuit breaker problem? Not many pilots know about the toilet circuit breakers in the flight attendant crew rest in the tail.

And I wonder if any carry tri-wing drivers, that's what our access panel was secured with. Probably due to some silly security regulation.

When asked if he was declaring an emergency the pilot responded, yes, it's a Full Pan.

That's because they're not there, toilet cb's are in the MEC, the toilet vacuum blowers are behind a panel by door 5L. Not that the blower cb's would help as diff pressure is used above 18000ft.

On the B747-400's at South African Airways, the CB's were located behind a panel in the cabin crew rest in the tail, right next to the black boxes!! Not sure where they were in the classics, but I personally had to reset them on a flight where all our toilets were not working, as maintenance had pulled the breakers during a check and not pushed them back in prior to returning the aircraft to the line.

Heron Turns Back

Not in the same league as the Jumbo incident but just as
embarrassing.

Years ago at Croydon we had bid farewell to our Jersey Airlines Heron as it taxiied away on Croydons grass field to commence its long slow amble to the far side of the airfield for take-off. After nearly 15 minutes of bumpy waddling it reached the far side - when with horror we suddenly realised we had not handed over the all important ships papers. A hasty call to the tower and the Dove slowly turned and retraced its steps to the apron. As the Heron came to a stop outside the terminal buiding the cabin door opened and the Captain - face black as thunder appeared. The bag was handed over with not a word said !
