Approach Lights

Afternoon.....one thats been puzzling me for ages...in this day and age of cost cutting/carbon footprint etc etc why do they leave approach lights on when they are taking off in that direction, for instance, just been past the end of 23R at Manchester, they were taking off on 05L but the approach lights on 23R were still on ???

Any reason ??

I drive past the 22 end of Stansted on my way to work, and unless they are working on the lights or checking them, they are switched off if they are using 04.

Also on occasion, the calibrator aircraft can be testing the navaid's on the opposite end!

There's usually an interlock system so that approach lighting only shows in one direction at a time selectable by ATC. This may be capable of being overridden by the airfield electricians though. Similarly the ILS will only radiate in one direction too - same frequency but different morse ident.
