I hope you are not pilot, let alone a test pilot with a Q like that.
The gear is extended for all test flights just in case anything goes wrong initially.
Planning for worst case scenarios, you know, what all pilots do.
Like I say, hope your not a pilot.
Out of bed on the wrong foot, today? Or back from a long trip you just found your GF with your best mate...

relax mate, could be just a curious SLF!

I was surprised by the apparent wing flex - and I wasn't the only one; the *******stream was full of comments.

Did we expect that much? Is it a materials/design characteristic, or was it just camera optics and not unusual?

Congratulations to all those involved in getting this beautiful bird into the sky!

They actually flap when there's a full load of Pax.

There was a rumour at the time of the first 767 test fight that suggested that when they put the gear up it took out one of the hydraulic lines, followed by a quick reroute of the line. Was it true?

If you'll re-read what I wrote, you'll see I said I was NOT a test pilot. Never was, never will be and do NOT know their proceedures. I knew someone like you would come along and point it out to me though. Thank you. BTW, I am not NOW a pilot, but BTDT for 30 years.

Managed to watch (albeit interruptedly) from a crappy connection here in the Heart of Darkness. Fantastic. IMHO she looks right; hopefully she will fly right.

Nice wing flex

DC-ATE,

FWIW, they will likely leave the gear down for the entire first flight. One less thing to deal with if there are other issues. Typical, in my experience of supporting Flight Test.

From Flightaware (Not sure if this will format properly):

01:49PM 48.15 -123.65 278° West 200 230 0.34 11,400 480 Seattle Center
01:50PM 48.16 -123.74 213° Southwest 200 230 0.34 12,200 360 Seattle Center
01:51PM 48.13 -123.77 96° East 149 171 0.25 12,200 Seattle Center
01:52PM 48.12 -123.68 89° East 66 76 0.11 12,200 Seattle Center
01:53PM 48.13 -123.59 85° East 143 165 0.24 12,300 60 Seattle Center

At 01:52PM the Groundspeed reduced to 66 kts! That sounds a bit interesting that early in the programme. Is that normal for 1st test flight?

Now this is indeed a fantastic end for 2009...

First the A400M, now the 787... what's next? The Spruce Goose again?

Congrats to all involved

Ah.....you're right again on all counts. Too bad you could not interpret my original comment. Sorry if my comments seemed silly to you who apparently knows more about test flying than I do. That was the least of my worries while I was flying, as every flight was a 'test flight' of sorts and we always raised the gear after take-off. But, thanks to 11Fan, I now know the procedure for test flights.

And, thanks, 11Fan, for the info.

Not true.

Boeing 757 first flight, 1982.

Airbus retracted the A400M's gear during the first flight last week (as they did during the A380's first flight).

Awesome stuff, the wing deflection is incredible. I think the terminology "wing span" should be changed to "Circular arc length".

There are some very strange low ground speeds on the FlightAware log. I wonder if this is when the plane is turning or changing altitude quickly and the log is taking data from GPS sources? GPS sources cannot account for anything other than level flight or driving.

I'd guess they are doing slow flight at times to test stall protection in the FBW at different flap settings - but likely the tracking is doing some averaging as well.

Otherwise it could be outrun by a C172....
